Ajrakh sari on Hand-woven tussar silk

Paisley design in Ajrakh.  It is the tear drop shaped motif with a curved upper end seen in the border here.

Traditional Ajrakh has many elements borrowed from the architecture of Mughal and Persian eras. But the famous Paisley design came very late into Ajrakh.

I first used the Paisley design in 2012. It was from a book a friend gave me. A book of Paisley designs from Persian culture.  I found the form and curve of the Paisley motif very interesting. And wooden bocks were carved combining Paisley motifs of different sizes with other traditional Ajrakh elements.

For this handwoven tussar silk sari, I used a combination of natural dyes to create a palette very different from traditional color combinations. I mixed pomegranate skin with turmeric to get the golden hue in the body. This further mixed with madder in certain areas(like the border) to give golden brown. And indigo with pomegranate skin for the greens.
